When buying a carpet, a number of factors need to be considered; colour, resistance to wear, price, suitability.
COLOUR
- Plain carpets tend to open up a room whereas a patterned carpet can be quite over powering in a small room. Using the same colour throughout will create a feeling of space.
- Patterned carpets hold their appearance and also help to hide things like soiling and spillage’s.
- Border carpets have a very distinctive style and are available in complementary or contrasting colours. Stair runners look stunning on stairs and hallways.
- Natural carpets are extremely popular and give a real feeling of space.
- North facing rooms tend to create a cold atmosphere and can be darker. Colours such as reds, South facing rooms are lighter and more airy. Colours such as blues, greens and greys are good choices as they provide a temperature without being cold and give a good impression of space.
- Dark shades of carpet can show up every piece of fluff wile pale carpets can show up soiling and spillages in areas of heavy use.
RESISTANCE TO WEAR
The performance of a carpet is dependent on a number of factors. The price of a carpet itself does not necessarily mean tat it will be more heavy duty than a less expensive one. The type of carpet is the key factor in determining the long-term performance.
PRICE
Price may be a factor in relation to the choice of carpet. Wool is more expensive compared with most synthetic fibres. A large price distinction can be seen between the weight difference in a woven carpet and a tufted carpet.
SUITABILITY
Things to be considered are:
- The area to be carpeted e.g. hall, stairs and landing
- The amount of traffic the carpet will receive
- Are there pets?
- The feel of the carpet required
- Whether it is plain or patterned
- The life expectancy of the carpet – whether it is needed for a rented apartment with a life expectancy of about 1-2 years or a family who don’t want to be replacing it for 10-15 years.
CARE OF CARPET
- A new carpet will produce a lot of loose pile which will need to be vacuumed.
- A carpet should be kept free of dirt at all times because friction between pile and dirt will increase the wearing on the carpet. The frequency of Vacuuming depends on use.
- Carpets should be cleaned professionally when needed. (approx once a year)
- Stair carpets should be moved at least every 18 months if possible.
- A mat places at all external doors can protect the life of the carpet
- Non house-trained pets should be kept off carpets
- Curtains should be closed if carpet is exposed to strong sunlight as fading will occur.
CARPET PROTECTION
The addiction of a protective finish can enhance the performance by preventing the artificial dyes found in food and drinks from permanently staining the carpet.
