FAQs About Mattresses

How often should I change my mattress?

You should change your mattress depending on the quality and estimated lifespan. Usually this falls somewhere in-between five-to-ten years.

What is the difference between an open coil spring system and a pocket spring system?

An open coil spring system, or Bonnell, is the most traditional form of spring unit and consists of a continuous coil being turned to form the connected spring units. Pocket springs are individual springs which behave independently of each other, depending on the amount of pressure they are under. The open coil spring can offer very good support, however the pocket spring system offers more support and is ideal for couples, as one side of the mattress is not as affected by movement on the opposite end.

Should I rotate or turn my mattress?

This all depends on the model. Some mattresses need to be turned over completely and rotated head-to-toe, while others are a one-sided and need only be rotated. Each model will have instructions attached, but if you are unsure just contact your salesperson and they will advise you. To get the optimum support and lifespan out of your mattress, follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Does my divan base need to be changed when I am purchasing a new mattress?

If you purchased your divan base at the same time as your mattress, it may be a good idea to change both, as the timbers in the divan can sag over time – even though they may not be visible to the naked eye.

Is it normal to have impressions in the mattress?

Due to the greater emphasis in comfort, mattresses have ever-increasing depths of foam and fillings like memory foam, gel and latex, and as a result of these more mouldable materials, impressions are left on the surface. A tolerance level of about 1.5 inches or 4 cm is acceptable.

What is memory foam?

Memory foam was developed by Nasa, originally for the space program. Its main benefits are its pressure-relieving qualities. It reacts to body heat and moulds around the sleeper so they are nestled into the mattress .There are different variations of memory foam and different densities available. Most importantly, opt for an open cell visco elastic foam, which is longer-lasting and dissipates the heat better. All memory foam mattresses are warmer than traditional ones, but open cell reduces the heat build-up.

What are the dimension sizes of mattresses?

All Irish and UK standard dimensions are available on our website. If you have a mattress outside these parameters just contact the shop and we may be able to get one manufactured to the size you require.

Is it possible to clean my mattress?

The only real cleaning of your mattress you can undertake is hoovering. After that, lightly damp a cloth to dab the surface. However, it’s not really advisable to wet the mattress or use chemicals on it, as they may damage the fillings and fabric. Remember, it’s very important to use a mattress protector to help prevent soiling, as any soiling will null and void your manufacturing warranty.

What is a zip & link mattress?

A zip & link mattress is a mattress linked together with a zip. This type is ideal where access is an issue – if you have a tight stairway, a narrow doorframe, etc. The process can be done on certain models and in 5ft. and 6ft. sizes. Please contact the store if unsure. A charge may apply, depending on the manufacturer.

Can I use my electric blanket on my memory foam mattress?

It is not advisable to use an electric blanket on a mattress containing memory foam, as it’s temperature-sensitive and the heat from the electric blanket can damage it.

What are the benefits of a pillow top on a mattress?

A pillow top on a mattress helps to improve the comfort level by increasing the distance between the body and the spring unit. By increasing this distance you are reducing the number of pressure points that build up.

Is a firm mattress always better for me?

The short answer is no, as sometimes a firm mattress can result in pressure on particular parts of the body, possibly resulting in increased movement during sleep, leading to more disruptive sleep.

My existing mattress does not seem to be regular size, how will I replace it?

Manufacturers can accommodate special order requests on certain mattress models. All you need to do is contact the store with the measurements you require and ask for assistance. An extra charge may apply depending on the size and request.

I’m finding my current mattress too warm. What will I look for in a new one that will help alleviate the problem?

There have been many new features added to mattresses that reduce the build-up of heat overnight. For example, there is gel, which is used as a comfort pad instead of warmer materials like memory foam or latex.
