Wood Floor Buying Guidelines

When selecting your wood flooring, we recommend making your choice with the following considerations in mind.

Choosing the Type of Wood to Suit Your Requirements

When purchasing new wood flooring we recommend that the space it is intended for is taken into consideration. The amount of traffic that the room or hallway will receive is an important factor, as it will ultimately determine the longevity of the floor.

The type of wood is another important aspect to look at when selecting a new wood floor. Making the choice between solid wood or semi-solid is easy with our fantastic collection of wood floor options. Our experienced sales team can also offer you excellent advice.

With the choice of light, medium and dark wood flooring, we are proud to offer a selection of options to suit all aesthetics. Ask in-store which particular wood may be best suited for your home.

How to Measure for Your New Wood Floor

Measuring for your new wood flooring is very similar to measuring for other flooring types. You will require the dimensions of the room in a squared measurement. To get these necessary results, simply measure the length of the room, followed by the breadth, and multiply.

At Michael Murphy Home Furnishing we also have a room measuring service. If you would like to avail of this service, please contact us or feel free to ask in-store for more details. A member of our Flooring Department will contact you to arrange a day for measurements to be taken.

When placing your order for your new wood flooring, it is important to ask whether you may need underlay. Underlay can help to insulate a room, increasing the warmth and also reducing noise.

Cleaning and Maintenance

To keep your wood floor in good condition, we recommend that it is swept and vacuumed regularly to prevent grit and dirt scratching the surface. To wash a wood floor, we advise using a mop or a damp cloth, with an anti-bacterial cleaner to remove any marks and dirt.

It is important to only use a damp, as opposed to a wet, cloth or mop; as too much moisture will damage the wood. We also recommend cleaning any spills immediately to prevent them staining the surface.

To prevent any scratches on your wood floors we recommend using felt pads on the feet of suites and armchairs, dining room sets and any additional heavy furniture, such as sideboards and display units.

Always try to lift furniture when moving it across or between rooms in your home, as dragging furniture will scratch the wood.

It is important to heat and ventilate the house in stages, all year round; as the humidity and ventilation in a room will affect the maintenance and upkeep of the wood.

It’s worth remembering that a solid wood floor can be sanded to maintain its surface, prolonging its lifetime.
