MATTRESS BUYING GUIDE
Reasons to Buy
The main reason to purchase a new mattress is because the current one has become uncomfortable. This will happen if you have had the mattress over a long period time, as the interior supports wear down. Although you will likely be able to feel when its time is up, check the estimated life-span of your mattress for a general guide on when to replace it.
Stick to What Your Body Knows
Providing your original mattress was comfortable for the first number of years, you may wish to consider a similar model, as too much of a change in feel or support may not suit your body.
The Right Size
Firstly, before you make a new purchase, establish the size you need by measuring the current mattress (not the bed frame). See our chart below for industry standard dimensions.
SIZES | ||
---|---|---|
Name | IMPERIAL SIZE | METRIC SIZE |
Single | 3’0″ x 6’3″ | 90 x 190cm |
Small Double | 4’0″ x 6’3″ | 120 x 190cm |
Double | 4’6″ x 6’3″ | 135 x 190cm |
King | 5’0″ x 6’6″ | 150 x 200cm |
Super King | 6’0″ x 6’6″ | 180 x 200cm |
Will it Fit?
Taking the size into account, ensure that your mattress can be brought into your home without a struggle by carefully measuring the pathway it will take – paying particular attention to narrow hallways, door frames and the staircase.
Get Comfy
If you’re coming into the store to try out your potential purchase, wear suitable, relaxed clothing, so you can test out the different models in comfort.
Advice
If you find yourself unsure of the different mattresses on offer, or you need advice, please ask one of our sales team for assistance and they will gladly talk through the different options available and find one that suits you best.
Narrow it Down
Try and narrow down the models you wish to try out. Three or four options would be best, as lying on multiple mattresses can be confusing.
Everybody is Different
Remember that people’s perceptions of whether a mattress is firm or soft vary, depending on their size and shape. So, it’s worth trying a few to work out what feels best to you personally.
Listen to What Your Body is Telling You
Your body and your spine do not lie in a perfectly straight line, so the mattress should react accordingly.
The Latest Developments
Look out for new developments in mattresses which might be beneficial for you. I.e. latex, gel, memory foam, etc.
Don’t Rush with a Decision
Take your time finding the right model. It’s a big decision. You can expect to spend eight hours a night in bed, so it’s best to shop when you have the time and are not in a hurry.
