FURNITURE FIT GUIDE

SOFAS

When it comes to sofas, getting the sizing just right is so important if you want to bring your intended interior landscape to life. If you’re concerned that your desired model won’t squeeze into your home – or even through the door – we have put together this useful guide to help sort your sizing before a purchase is made.

While this guide is a quick and handy general indicator, if you run into difficulty, or you’re just not sure of something, give our lovely team a call on 1890 917 003 or pop into one of our five stores and chat to our knowledgeable sales team.

Step 1: Take Your Measurements

WHAT WILL YOU NEED?

  • A measuring tape
  • Something to record your measurements on
  • Access to our website at www.michaelmurphy.ie

1(a): MEASURE YOUR NEW SOFA

Start with getting the correct dimensions of your new sofa. All dimensions are available underneath the product images on our website, www.michaelmurphy.ie. The dimensions are given as Depth (D) x Width (W) x Height (H) in centimetres, so make sure you have the correct number for each. Have these in front of you for the rest of this process, as you will need to refer back to them during each step.

1(b): MEASURE THE AREA

To ensure a correct fit, measure the intended space that your new sofa will occupy. Make sure that you have enough room to navigate the sofa into place, keeping immovable objects, such as radiators, light fixtures, etc., in mind.

Step 2: Accessibility

NAVIGATING THE ROUTE

In order to get your sofa to its desired location, consider how it will be brought into the house and if you have the necessary space. Literally map out the route from the exterior front step, to the room your sofa will occupy. Measure the doorways, hallway and any other tight space that our delivery men will have to bring the sofa through. If your new model is too large across the depth, width or height, you may run into trouble, so figuring this out beforehand is extremely helpful.

Note: It is worth checking to see if your new sofa has removable legs, as this may lessen the space required to manoeuvre it into place.

2(a): DOORWAYS

Measure the front doorway, as this will likely be the first obstacle. Open the door as far as it will go and measure from the inner edge of the doorframe to the outer edge of the door. Once the doorway’s width is greater than the sofa’s height (H), it should fit.

However, if this number is less than the height (H) of your sofa, then you will need to consider having the sofa brought in upright. In this case, measure the height of your doorframe (from the floor to the inner side of the top frame). If this number is greater than the width (W) of your sofa, it should fit.

Repeat the same process with any interior doorways the sofa will need to pass through.

2(b): HALLWAYS & STAIRS

Though doorways are the first concern, you will also need to keep the dimensions of any room or hallway that the sofa needs to pass through in mind. Measure the width of the hallway at its narrowest point. If this number is greater than the height (H) of your sofa, it should fit. Make yourself aware of awkward corners and immovable fixtures. If you find you need to move furniture, be conscious of what needs to move and where it can be moved to while the sofa is installed.

If the route includes stairs, measure the width of the stairs at the narrowest point. If this number is greater than the height (H) of your sofa, it should fit.

Note: Take any railings or bannisters into consideration.
