Animated Interiors: Studio Ghibli’s Dedication to Detail

Last time we delved into Disney’s world of interiors (see here), so it’s time to explore the fantastical realms of some of Studio Ghibli’s masterpieces; these Japanese animated feature films containing some of the most stunning cartoon interiors imaginable – with an unmatched level of detail.

Howl’s Moving Castle (2004)

The highlight: Howl’s busy, ornate bedroom (centre image) is beautifully drawn, filled to the brim with miscellaneous items and treasures – and we love the intricate chaos.

From Up On Poppy Hill (2011)

The highlight: The beautifully haphazard layout and dressing of the foyer of Coquelicot Manor (left image) – the stained glass and chandeliers balanced with random ladders, ropes and clothes lines – creates a fascinating picture that we would love to see recreated in reality.

The Secret World of Arrietty (2010)

The highlight: As the story follows a family of tiny people – inspired by Mary Norton’s The Borrowers – the gorgeous home designed for the family, dressed with wheat, berries and all manner of foliage, is as unique as it is charming. Personally, we love the use of the pocket watch as a large wall clock (second row down; left).

Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989)

The highlight: The striped and patterned sunshine yellow wallpaper, paired with baby pink curtains, bed covers and other dressings makes for a sweet picture (bottom; centre) to happily inspire any young girl’s bedroom decor.

Spirited Away (2001)

The highlight: This movie has so many spellbinding scenes, sequences and colours that it’s hard to choose just one – however, the kitchen below is a sure favourite, what with its cosy, homely feel; the black and white tiles set against a red stove and green cupboards to magnificent effect.
