How to Choose The Perfect Mattress

Have you ever thought about buying a new mattress? If yes, then you should definitely consider the importance of choosing a good quality mattress. The mattress is one of the most important parts of our sleep cycle. It provides comfort and support during the night.

There are various types of mattresses available in the market. Each type has its pros and cons. For example, memory foam mattresses are known for their ability to provide pressure relief and reduce stress. On the other hand, spring mattresses offer better support and bounce back after being compressed.

Choosing the right mattress depends on your sleeping habits, preferences, budget, etc. In this article, we’ll discuss some of the common types of mattresses and their features.

Getting enough sleep is super important

Did you know, a good night sleep is extremely important for your body. Studies show that a good nights rest is linked to a reduction in stress, weight loss and even reduces your chances of developing more serious health problems like heart disease or diabetes.

A mattress is a direct link to getting enough sleep. A study showed that 20% of people were unsatisfied with their mattress, despite having purchased within the past two years. This is why choosing the correct mattress for your sleeping pattern is crucial.

Memory foam or spring?

A memory foam mattress moulds around the body and is dependant on both weight and heat. These mattresses are suitable for people who need additional support on their joints. Memory foam mattresses can get quite warm, so these are super for the winter season.

Spring mattresses are a cost effective solution. These mattresses are super easy to manoeuvre and flip and are usually light in weight. A spring mattress will need to be replaced more often, so these are best suited to a guest room where it will not be used as much.

Pocket spring mattresses can be expensive, however, a pocket spring mattress is considered a luxury. These offer the perfect amount of support throughout the mattress and these tend to last a lot longer. These mattresses are fantastic for people who suffer from back pain. A mattress will last around 10 years, so it is an investment.

Choose the correct firmness

Choosing the correct firmness level can be tricky, and it all comes down to your sleeping pattern. If you sleep on your stomach, it is recommended that you purchase a firm mattress to keep both your neck and spine aligned. For people who sleep on their back, a medium-firm mattress is most suitable, this will reduce any strain or muscle pinching. A soft mattress is recommended for those who primarily sleep on their side or those who need additional relief in the shoulders, hips and lower back.

Mattress care

As we have mentioned, a mattress can be an expensive purchase. It is essential to take care of your mattress to get the most out of it and get a good night sleep. After purchasing a new mattress, leave it in a warm room with good ventilation to allow the air to travel through it. This will ensure that the mattress returns to it’s original form after being transported. For memory foam/roll-out mattresses, remove these from their box and allow these to sit in a warm room for 24 hours to fully shape. It is important during this period to not have any bed linen on your mattress.

Some mattresses best keep their shape when flipped every 3 – 6 months. You will need to check if it is suitable to flip your mattress. Some mattresses will simply require rotation only. This helps keep the structure great without one area being worn down too early.

Vacuuming and cleaning your mattress will help to keep it fresh and last longer. This will also help keep dust out of the fibres. We recommend our Revive & Care mattress kit for cleaning.
