The Incredible Set Design of ‘The Crown’

The Crown is due to move into its third season later this year and we can’t wait to see Olivia Colman take on the role of Queen Elizabeth II – stepping into shoes previously filled by the impeccable Claire Foy – alongside Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret. And with the news that Gillian Anderson will be making an appearance as Margaret Thatcher in the fourth season, the excitement is building. But taking a step back from these brilliant performers, you have to admire how beautiful the show physically looks. The cinematography and set design come together to make a truly impressive picture of royal life – whether in Buckingham Palace, Windsor or beyond. Interior eye candy is also provided in the spaces that play home to Winston Churchill, Wallace Simpson and others, across Britain, France, Scotland, etc. Having browsed through some of the striking photos of these spaces, we have put together a small collection of some of our favourites, which show off just how striking the scenes are in this series.

 A Grand Scale

From the embellished columns, barrel vault arches and panelled walls to the sheer number of gold-framed paintings and lavish carpet, this foyer is a sight to behold.

Decadent Dressings

It’s hard to tell were the floor and ceiling meet the walls in this scene, as the entire space is so lavishly dressed.

Chic Foliage

A more pared-back and chic setting, the gold and navy palette set around Wallace Simpson and Prince Edward is opulent, but on a less grand and not so old-fashioned scale; creating a style that suits this controversial couple perfectly in this scene.

Polished Timber

We are in love with the polished surface of this table. Its high-shine walnut is so striking that it actually pulls our attention away from the background completely.

Accessorising

Even with the overwhelming impact of each set in general, it’s the details that make this show so extraordinary. From each photo frame, carved console table, fringed lamp and carved marble fireplace, the attention to smaller details and minute elements is everything.

Panels & Drapes

Heavy drapes and intricate gold linework and ornamentation on the tall panelled walls offer an old-world look at ultimate luxury.

Cosy & Private

The final shot is dedicated to Winston and Clementine Churchill’s understated sitting room. Warm, cosy and a direct contrast to the scenes shown above, the roll-back leather armchairs and handsome side table come together to create an intimate scene that is attractive in a very different manner to the style of Buckingham Palace.
