We recently had the pleasure to sit down with award-winning interior designer Jackie Tyrrell to talk about all things design, as well as the concept she’s created for the PTSB Ideal Home Show which you can read more about here.

You can also learn more about our look for the Ideal Home Show by taking a look at our latest blog post unveiling the look here.

Jackie has passionately pursued a career in interior design over the last 22 years, combining her artistic and creative personality with her ability to be incredibly technically minded and producing original and practical interior design solutions

We took the opportunity to ask Jackie to share her top tips and tricks to consider when designing an interior setting within your home.

  1.  Don’t be afraid to mix and match your materials.
“Texture absorbs or reflects sounds depending on what’s chosen, so going for soft fabrics like velvet, hanging wallpaper on a feature wall or even a rug can dampen sound and make space feel immediately more comfortable, so be brave and create a wealth of tactile layers within the space,” explains Jackie.
  2. Choose open pieces to keep to maximize on the space you have.
“When trying to make a space appear larger, chose items that bounce light around the space, like mirrors or reflective finishes. If you can see under or through pieces of furniture it also helps to expand the floor space, the open nature of these pieces shows off what’s behind them, allowing the room to appear larger, while also creating an airy breathability to the look,”
  3. Don’t be afraid to position your lighting off centre.
“Turn the traditional room setting as you know it on its head. We’re still using the traditional Victorian footprint when it comes to designing our lighting and its time to modernize. Be more adventurous with hanging pendants or spotlighting, have your lighting act as the focal point within the room. Don’t be afraid to be bold!”
  4. Get clever with your storage options.
“As designers, we understand that the flow of space and lack of storage can have a negative emotional effect on our clients, so with this in mind, we’ve often try and feature clever storage options to help create an incredibly calming but equally useful area within the home
